When the Dallas Cowboys announced they had signed Sanjay Lal as their new wide receivers coach, many Cowboys fans were hoping he can get the best out of Dez Bryant as he had with his other receivers during his stops in Buffalo and Indianapolis.
For the Cowboys and their fans, it would be great to have Bryant return to his previous form because it would make their offense better. However, there is another advantage to the team signing Lal.
During his time with the Buffalo Bills, Lal developed a great relationship with Sammy Watkins, who had his best season as a pro while working under Lal. Now that Watkins is a free agent, Lal might be able to convince him to sign with the Cowboys, which would be a significant upgrade for Dallas.
One of the biggest issues the Cowboys had at the receiver position this year was a lack of speed. Bringing in Watkins will change that because he is a deep threat that will command a lot of attention on the outside, which will allow Dez Bryant room to operate in the middle.
Watkins biggest issue has been the fact that he can’t seem to stay healthy, but he played in 15 games last season after missing 11 games in the past two seasons.
In his one season with the Rams, Watkins was the team’s fourth option and still finished with 593 yards and eight touchdowns. If he was the first or second option, he would have put up some big numbers.
In an interview he did while he was still with the Bills, Watkins credited Lal for his improvement.
“He is great. He is a great coach and so far I haven’t even been on the field with him that much but my game has improved with just the little things and the details,” Watkins said. “Seeing our receivers right now become true receivers. He is teaching us how to play the game.”
With Dallas’ lack of depth at the receiver position, the team needs to ask Lal to help them convince Watkins to join them.
